Subject: Aces Over Europe!
Finally, Dynamix came out with the best WWII simulator. Yes it took some time
but its here.
They fixed the throttle sound problem, that Aces of the Pacific had. And
improved the flight model, now in tight high G turns the wings' stall and the
plane goes into a visious spin, which can only be recovered by the rudder (<,>
keys). The improved sound has made the game that much more playable.
Does anyone know when the modem game of Aces will come out?

Subject: DOOM and GUS!
After reading all the messages about DOOM and possible GUS Support, and
possibly not. (Depending on Size).
I have come to the following conclusion:
If they cannot include GUS Support in the s/w release then why not include
the files necessary for native GUS sound in a seperate archive for GUS
Users?
Example: DOOM.ARJ - S/w release archive
DOOMGUS.ARJ - Files needed for native GUS Support
I'm sure alot of peope would agree with this method, as I know I would like
to test it out before I buy it, even though I will get it anyway, but I
would like to try it out, with GUS sound before hand.(Software is no fun
without audio these days, and pc-squeaker doesn't qualify).
And UltraWOLF is here at the right time, getting us al psyched up for DOOM!

I've looked at the sound/patches subdirectory for the gravis
ftp sites and noticed some files are .arj files. What is this
format and what tool do I need to extract these files? Where
can I get this tool?
Thanks for any info,

The whine and static is due to the game using GM instruments for the
sound effects. Some of the X-Wing noises are rendered with a flute (or
similar instrument), and the welding noises during one of the cinematic
sequences is the applause patch. These are the noises the game uses,
and Mega-Em just does what it's told here.

Copy the new ultrasnd.ini into you /ultrasnd directory (not /ultrasnd/midi),
and edit the patchdir= fields to match your own configuration.

The MIDI port driver is included with the ZIP file that contains the
new GUS audio driver, /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit/gus0035.zip on Epas.

If the game supports GM, choose GM and run the new mega-em in GM mode (i.e.
without emuset's -mt switch). If the game only supports the MT-32, then run
Mega-Em using emuset's -mt switch. Note that unlike earlier Mega-Em's,
the new one defaults to GM mode instead of MT-32 mode. Following these
instructions should minimize the occurrence of inappropriate instruments.

Your symptoms are exactly those experienced by people who haven't
copied the new ultrasnd.ini over to /ultrasnd (not /ultrasnd/midi).
Note that there are several banks of instruments. Did you edit the
patchdir fields for all the banks?

Just use lha (a.k.a lharc) to decompress them :)
Just specify the full name, i.e. lha x file.lha <enter>
As far as my knowledge go, .lha
is the equivalent on the Amiga to .lzh on the PC. I've frequently
ftp'ed some mod's off amiga sites. These files usually end in .lha.
To extract them, you must use the -a switch of lha, so that it will
extract the file regardless of file attributes. Also, since mod files
on the Amiga is usually names something like mod.MyVeryGoodSong, it
ends up something like mod.myv on your MSDOS system, and is sometimes
hidden or have other attributes set, because of attribute incompatibilities
between Amiga and PC. Just rename the extracted file and fix its
attributes if necessary and all's well...
Ciao.

Subject: MEGAEM works with POPII beautifully
I would also like to add that Prince of Persia II works beautifully with
MEGAEM. The trick is just to set the Sound Blaster emulation at IRQ 5.
Just load MEGAEM with:
MEGAEM /SBI5
EMUSET (for General Midi emulation)
PRINCE
and you will be on your way to hear the sounds. WAY better than SBOS!

Subject: Re: new windows drivers
Tried to send this yesterday but dsd mailer bounced it.
People are still having problems with the new drivers.
Apart from making sure that the new ultrasnd.ini is in \ultrasnd,
and that the directory names in it point to the patch files
(\ultrasnd\midi), other things to check are in system.ini
(in \windows) - look for all occurrences of "ult".
The lines device=grvsultr.386, midi=ultrasnd.drv, wav=ultrasnd.drv,
aux=ultrasnd.drv, midi1=ultmport.drv should occur. If there is no
directory path on the files, then make sure that the new versions
of the files are in \windows\system, or alternatively, put a path
on the filenames to point them to where the files are.
I keep mine in \ultrasnd\windows rather than clutter up \windows\system,
so I have a line like device=\ultrasnd\windows\grvsultr.386.
I think that some earlier GUS install procedure also went for
\ultrasnd\windows, but if you just install drivers from Control Panel,
they end up in \windows\system - you can then move them if you want.

Subject: No more Mega-Em crashes!
I no longer have any problems with Mega-em! It works all through NHL hockey
and XWing and anything else I try. All I had to do was switch my system over
to QEMM 7.02 from EMM386. I have not experienced any side-effects of this
change, other than about 32k more upper memory and 16k more conventional!
By the way, has anybody got Links 386 to work under dos 6 with some type of
SB emulation? When I run links /m, it reports that I have 100k less memory
than I really do! I suspect that this is why the SB options are greyed out.
I have version 1.05 (I think) or whatever the version was posted in January
on the internet. Any tips?

Has anyone ordered a GUS directly from Gravis? Did you have any problems
with your order? I ordered direct from Gravis to insure that I get the
lastest rev. 2.4 board.
When I ordered my GUS, I was told that it would be delivered within 10 days.
Now it has been 22 days and I am still waiting. Gravis does not return my
calls or answer my email.
I am worried.

1. Does anybody know the internet address of WOS productions.
(I'm interested in their techno patches)
2. How do I switch banks with the new GUS windows drivers?
John GUS Smith told me to read his readme file included in GUS0035,
but I must be an idiot coz I just could not find any indication on
how to switch from bank0 to bank1.
I've tried to indicated in Midisoft Rec Session Bank=1 but...nothing
happened :-(
(my guess is that the new drivers do not yet support bank switching)

Yup, its true. I hooked a PAS MIDImate up to a GUS 2 days ago, and it worked
fine for MIDI out. I didn't try it with MIDI in, though.
You need an LHA program to decompress that file, alright. LZ stands for
Lempel-Ziff (or Zith or something) the last names of the guys that invented
the compression technique. LH Arc uses this technique.
Download LHA255 and then use LHA X filename.foo

I bought Rebel Assault when it first came out. There is no indication on

P.S. I've looked in the stores at the newer Rebel Assault Packages and it

Surround : What does it really sound like?
hi,
I have an AIWA stereo system, wich is supposed to provide surround sound.
I have connected my GUS to it, and I am now always surprised to hear the sound of the two rear speakers also comming from the left ones.
As I had never experienced surround before, I'd like someone to confirm if it is normal or not.
What is happening:
- both rear speakers seem to play the same and are independant of the balance-control.
- sounds from the rear can also be heard from the front-left speaker.
Thanx for any info.
T'is a shame to have a heavy price stereo is it doesn't work!
